What does killing feel like? I'd argue this is political because I just find it hard to understand how large groups of people can just start doing that to one an other. So It seems an Important Question to ask if one is to understand How civil wars or even just mass/persistent violence can start.

I’ve been in combat but I have no confirmed kills. I can only tell you that pulling the trigger feels like nothing. It feels automatic. Doing what I was trained to do.

I would suggest the book On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society by Dave Grossman. Statistically most of the killing in war has been done by a small sub-section of soldiers, those men often demonstrating antisocial behaviors and prone to mild insubordination. Not all of them are psychopaths, but the proverb "10% of the soldiers do 90% of the killing" is not far from the truth.

Killing an enemy in a war is very much different from killing a human being in other situations. In modern military you are not taught to kill anybody, instead you are taught destroy the enemy. The wording itself, as well as other military lessons, is a psychological trick ofc, but a very powerful one. One must also remember that most casualties in a war are made by indirect fire. Firing a gun towards a person in close quarter combat like in American movies still requires some level of sociopathy.

Depends on who you are killing. Looking at someone you've known your entire life and pulling the trigger? Psychologically this will have a greater and more complex effect than killing a random. Regardless, short of you being sociopathic, taking a man's life is the easiest, hardest thing you'll ever do. I dont feel guilty. Well, let's see if this gets me banned or listed:
It depends. In Germany, we have a saying that roughly translates to "the enemy should have no face". What that basically means, is that killing doesn't burden you as long as you fail to understand what you're doing. Sure, you'll see something vaguely human-shaped drop, or if you're closer, you might smell and feel the blood on your body and see the guts. but as long as you can keep that dissociation going, it simply doesn't matter, and feels no different from splitting wood or changing a tire.
However, when you realize that the other side is also a human - ex. when you have to take down someone you've just been talking to, bcs they reach behind their back at a checkpoint and might be drawing a gun - that fucking sucks. Sure, you can (usually) justify it to yourself, but simply having to make that justification already hurts. I'd assume that having to kill someone you know would be even worse.

It's the same with slaughtering animals, btw. Killing a deer? Fucking easy, as long as it's a clean kill, and still easily bearable even if you've missed slightly and have to follow up with knife and pistol. Killing a sheep that was just nuzzling you a minute ago? Terrible, even if it's a mercy killing.

isn't accurate. The people "without inner monologue" weren't so much surprised that some people had it, but that those people COULDN'T THINK WITHOUT IT. Being one of the former myself, when I "switch" to inner monologue, it massively slows down my thinking. Feels like driving a car with the handbrake on, basically, and turns considerations that might otherwise take less than a second into several minutes. For example, if looking at a simple linear equation, I immediately know the solution, but if I think about it as "multiply with this, subtract that, divide by this", it takes half a minute.

Now imagine someone who literally can't do anything without having an "inner voice" telling him to do it. Sounds like a marionette to me.

But even then only in the second case I described, where you've already interacted with the dead as you would with a human. i guess if you can talk to someone, act politely, and still consider them as something (not someone) of absolutely no value, you might be able to kill without feeling.
When shooting from a distance, skin color etc. don't matter at all. You see a silhouette, your finger moves, the silhouette drops. it's not a human at that point, just a target. And when you advance, you don't look at the dead long enough to think, you just check that they don't move, then go on, and leave them for the guys behind to clean up.
