>On August 8, 2025, at approximately 4:00 a.m., 911 callers in an apartment building in New Brunswick, NJ reported a female resident, later identified as Deborah Terrell, age 68, was disturbing the other residents.
>Terrell refused to open her front door or speak to responding officers, and they left, only to return to her apartment later at 7:32 a.m., after a 911 call from a resident reporting that Terrell had begun repeatedly going in and out of her apartment and threatening other tenants with a knife.
>New Brunswick emergency dispatch then sent officers and EMTs to Terrell’s apartment. At approximately 7:38 a.m., officers arrived and spoke with witnesses who had observed Terrell wielding a large knife.
>At approximately 7:41 a.m., officers approached Terrell’s apartment door and knocked.

>At one point, Terrell opened the door with a large knife in her hand, and when officers asked her to drop the weapon, she immediately shut the door, locked it from the inside, and could be heard shouting inside the apartment.
>Terrell then began sliding the knife's blade back and forth in the gap underneath the door while shouting through the door.
>After spending some time shouting and sliding the knife back and forth underneath the bottom of the apartment door, while officers unsuccessfully attempted to communicate with Terrell, she opened the door and stepped into the hallway saying, “C’mon” while holding the knife.
>Two of the responding officers deployed less lethal pepper spray and taser against Terrell, which were not effective.
>In response, Terrell started to retreat back into her apartment, but she then turned towards officers with the knife raised in her hand, emerged into the hallway, and came towards them.
>As Terrell advanced on the officers, one officer fired his service weapon twice, striking the suspect.
>After officers and EMTs rendered emergency aid.
>Deborah Terrell was transported to a hospital in New Brunswick, where she was later pronounced deceased.
>A 12-inch knife was recovered at the scene.
