You watch too much slop, frendo. Barbarian did not mean technologically primitive. It meant non-Greek-speaker (and later, non-Greek-or-Latin-speaker). Roman arms and armor technology was largely imported from barbarians. The Cimbrian Wars mentions Cimbri and Teuton (from my neck of the woods) cavalry forces in full harness and with plumed helmets.

Dont forget the fact that you can run faster than a tank, better reflexes tactical acumen etc.
