the Empire was enriching a small class of very rich people but it bankrupted the country. Wars etc were just desperate attempts to stay on top. The US is doing essentially the same thing right now, but so far less awful.

It wasn't just Danzig. Germans wanted to take all of Poland and Eastern Europe. That would be a death sentence for Britain, so naturally they intervened.
