Should I just drop everything and move to Alaska? I was born and raised in the DFW area, it is becoming shit. I see no future here. I’ve been thinking about quitting my job and then driving all the way to Alaska. I’m White, 24 and single with no kids. I’ve always had a fascination with Alaska, I think it would dramatically improve my happiness.

Go visit first. Used to be you could find plenty of day labor up there from spring to fall. If you can survive a full year and still want to live there, fine. I wouldn't relocate until you've done a whole year though.

That is how a lot of people end up in Alaska. They dislike society and want to go to a last frontier.

But many find once they get there life is not magicly different. Most of the last frontier still exists within the same society they dislike. Except now it is dark 25% of the year and too bright to sleep 25% of the year. Homes cost more and must be built more expensively to accomodate extreme weather. And it takes even more drive than normal to not end up a drunk or druggy staying inside out of the elements. Just getting groceries may be a half or all day event outside a few bigger communities.

Everyone knows first-aid kits are wealthy and how expensive it is there. The median annual income there is like twice that of the usa. The median there is the equivalent of a low 6 figure income as average and is higher than even cities like LA and NYC where the biggest earners are. Sure the USA has much higher highs in some places but the wealth divide here has grown such that even though 6 figures is pretty typical here in professional careers too the average american still can not afford Switzerland.

Try the cities first and then move your way out to the frontier. Ease yourself into Alaska life unless you have things you can bring with you like a camper fully loaded.

Have you been through a winter anywhere in the North? Do you know what affect it will have on you to not see the sun for months? Think you are depressed now? Just you wait. I'd recommend doing a lot of research, because I've thought about doing the same thing (although I'm fortunate to still have a remote job)

Basically the cities are kind of shitholes and there aren't many jobs, there is a wealthy elite that rules the state like anywhere else (along with the Natives who also have their own tribal corporations). A lot of it is barren frozen tundra. If you want to actually get away from society you need a lot of money and skills to get started because most of the state isn't accessible by road, so you need to charter flights or learn to fly and buy a bush plane and/or boat ($$$). If you need anything material you need to fly it in in the most remote towns. More $$$. I've also heard of a lot of corruption in the state police and fish and game service. You'd think you could just fly under the radar anywhere but that's not exactly true.

Basically don't romanticize it, there are lot of real problems you will have to deal with

Honestly? No. Alaska is extremely expensive, and even if you had work lined up for you, chances are that work isn't permanent employment. You want solitude? Move to a swamp or the deep woods.
