Hey everyone, I need to get this off my chest
Nepal has just banned 26 major social media platforms Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, X, WhatsApp, Reddit, LinkedIn… basically almost everything we use daily. Only platforms that followed the government’s new rules, like TikTok and Viber, are still working.
Let me tell you, this is more than just a tech issue. The government is corrupt, and the country is going downhill fast. I’ve spent 20 years of my life studying, dreaming of opportunities after graduation, and now unemployment hits hard. But it’s not just unemployment—there’s favoritism, nepotism, and corruption everywhere. Social media was our one platform where we could actually speak up about it.
For Gen Z and Millennials, social media wasn’t just entertainment it was a place to share political opinions, expose corruption, and show the government the problems in our country. If a minister was caught doing something shady, we posted about it. We called out officials, debated policies, and held those in power accountable. But apparently, they don’t like being exposed, so now they’re taking away that power from us.
The new rules basically force platforms to register with the government, appoint grievance officers, and comply with content takedowns. In other words, if a platform helps the government delete posts or reveal the people posting them, they’re welcomed. Freedom of speech? Gone.

We don’t even have our own independent platform where we can speak freely. They blocked YouTube too, just because people posted opinions or criticism about them. That’s insane this is not just about regulation; it’s about silencing the voices of the people.
And to top it all off, our Prime Minister, KP Sharma Oli, doesn’t even know how to speak proper English, yet he’s making these huge decisions that affect our lives, our freedom, and our future. It’s frustrating beyond words.
I’m writing this because anyone who reads it can help us. Share this message, spread it across the internet, let the world know what’s happening in Nepal. We cannot and will not lose our freedom of speech. Social media is not just apps it’s our voice, our community, and right now, they’re trying to take that away.
Please, help us get this message out. We need the world to see this. Thank you.
