Yes, OPEC is a very important trading bloc in the global economy so we learn about it to better understand the motivations of our psychotic elite.

It is common knowledge not just in America.
Especially because Venezuela nationalized their oil production which really pissed off Western countries who claimed their own for themselves but would never let foreigners touch their oil reserves of course...

In a way. Their oil enabled a communist government to prop itself up. That's what lead to the problem.
In reality their oil is very undesireable and extremely difficult to work with, it's almost sludge.

In the US the education is controlled by lobby groups. Unions for example insert pro-union learnings into the curriculum. And gun groups do the same. Bill Gates inserted his own special way of teaching math called Common Core.

Because of this, recent American history is not taught. Anything newer than 100 years is seen as way too politicized and shouldn't be in a classroom. There are special classes for that but it's not in the main education.

Americans will often know a lot about the Revolutionary War, and the Civil War, and even a bit about the Progressive Era and WW1. But when it comes to WW2 or anything after that, they rely on movies or news articles.

A lot of the US oil production really relies on a high price of oil. If the price is low, the US reserves are no longer profitable.
The absolute cleanest, purest, and easiest to work with is the oil from the Gulf Coast. The price of that oil is easily the cheapest. Without that the world economy would be in a very different place.

USA has been eyeing Venezuela's oil for decades.
The idea of a country using oil profits to pay for free healthcare is like pouring sand on their circumcised cocks.
