It's the same way in Mexico. They haven't developed appropriate ways to dispose of trash. When everything (non metal) is made with local, natural materials, piles of trash like this don't form, and dissapear within a few years. It's only the plastic and shit we've started using in the last 100 years or so that don't break down on a non-geological time scale stacking up and causing all this. Also, the plastic shit is cheaper, so it's even easier to justify throwing it away.

That being said, if you're using plastic, you need to have disposal infrastructure in place or else.

you couldnt pay me to eat spawning salmon. the fish basically starve themselves to death on their death march to their spawning ground, and they kill themselves after spawning. the best tasting salmon are those pulled straight from the ocean, or at least within 1 mile of the mouth of the river they are entering. the moment they spend any amount of time in fresh water, they start to take on a muddy flavor and are only fit for cat food or garden fertilizer.
