I might be revealing a little, and I don't live in aus but another anglo country (not US) but I have some direct experiance with childrens services form a practitioner perspetive. The state absolutely does not want your kids. They will do everything in their power to make you keep them, and its a very difficult decision to make. there are several tens of layers of protections in place to try to reconcile parents and children before the decision to remove is even thought about.
When it happens, it can happen quickly which is why i think people think its easy but it really isn't. you have to be a real fuck up or direct danger to your own children for it to happen and its really not common. more often than not children are removed from a dangerous situation but then returned when the parents can prove they won't hurt them, or placed with a family member. hell in my country the state will literally pay the parents to keep their children because its cheaper for them to fix whatever family drama caused the issue, and better for the kids.
the vast, vast majority of children in care are there becuase they are incapable of being looked after by regular familes. think that one autistic kid from the louis theroux doc from a while back. not all kids in care a like that, but being in care can fuck you up permenantly and the everyone knows this, thats why its the last last case scenario
