Jesus was saying - whilst salvation was initally for the Jews - the commandments and covenant had been made by Moses and God for them - this was changing - becuase of Christ, it would no longer matter - you could be saved irrespective of whether you were a gentile, a Samaritan or a Jew, as long as they believed in the truth it no longer mattered where the physical manifestation of that on earth (the Temple for the Jews) was. Usually when there are "contradictions" wrt. duration of reign of some kings its because their years may be counted from the founding of the dynasty/line, or because the "first year" of their reign is counted as what we would call the second year. Why do the parts of the books of Isaiah and Jeremiah from the dead sea scrolls show basically no change compared to the versions we have today then? If there was no change in the last 2000 years, why should there have been any in the 1500 years before?

Just read the passage. Jesus and his apostles were Jews (ethnically), so He was saying they understood salvation but the Samaritan did not. Pretty simple.

Your translation added "Samaritan" to that verse. It's in previous verses but not in that verse in any manuscripts I see. If it's italicized it means the translation added the word for clarity.
