Why Russia doesn't make sense? The reason is simple - in modern times if you are economically weak, then you are also weak politically. This is why Britain became the biggest empire of modernity - it left agrarian economy the earliest and colonized Africa, Middle East and Asia. And why were those regions colonized? Because they were weaker. Why? Because they were agrarian. This is why everybody in the world speaks english.

Similarly - why wasn't Japan colonized? Simple, it became industrial in XIX century and became strong, so industrial West was too weak to colonize it.

Now Russia. A country which was for longer time peasant, rural, agrarian and yet, it wasn't colonized. Moreover, it was competetive with industrial West. Agrarian country could compete with British Empire and similar.

So why Russia works even though it doesn't make sense? Russia works because it neutralizes its economic weakness by radical centralization of resources. Russia works because it consists of 2 different worlds - metropolitan elite and provinces that still live in 1st half of XX century. In Russia you either belong to the elite or you are a serf from 100 years ago. I suspect a lot of Russians feel very alien in their own country, because they don't recognizes themselves in russian province.

Normally you would expect such country to break down or be weak and yet against all odds, Russia is stronk, at the cost of having 2 parallel worlds inside itself.
