308 is generally considered superior to 5.56 for long range precision shots. It's not the premier sniping round but it's one of the most common rifle rounds in circulation so it'd be easy to find both ammo and a rifle for it; much easier than getting Lapua or some other operator shit. Arguably easier than getting a scary black rifle since 308 gets used by deer hunters, opening up the possibility of stealing a standard bolt action from a hunter friend/family or just buying one cheaply. Would explain the lack of followup shots, by the time he could work the bolt he saw he'd succeeded.

It isn't the longest distance in the world but if you're picking in the abstract, 308 would be preferred here to 5.56 or 9mm. Any other caliber would just be a headscratcher in terms of making acquisition difficult for no reason.

We don't know anything about this shooter, but if a bullet skipped off Kirk's vest it left his shirt remarkably intact. That's also the opposite of what body armor even does. Ceramic plates are designed to crumple to absorb the energy. Kevlar is like a catcher's mitt, there'd be nothing hard to bounce off of, and I don't think Kevlar even defeats 308 at that range. So we'd have to be assuming that for some unknown reason, Charlie Kirk was wearing steel plates (that nobody ever recommends wearing) that just happened to deflect a round straight into his neck. To a college campus? The typical choice would be to put Kirk in a soft vest, not strap him with steel plates.

Just seems implausible. Somebody nailed Kirk right in the throat with a rifle round, that's what the video shows.

It wasn't a perfect shot they were aiming center mass on him and the shot went high. it's called true horizontal distance, if you're 200 yards away and at a 30% angle for example its like 170ish yards really, so you have to hold off slightly lower in the shot or it'll go high like here. it depends on the zero but im pretty sure they were probably zero'ed at 300 yards or something like that so it would go higher anyway without a hold and then from an angle its even shorter, so the shot probably went a good 7-8inches high and hit him in the neck. welcome to basic shooting.
