There is a naive belief among Americans, even those who are prepared for this sort of thing, that it will be clear cut and obvious - like their last civil war. This side will have a flag and a colour and the other side will have a different flag and a different colour and talk differently. And you can draw a neat line on a map between them. Except it won’t be that. It’ll be mind bendingly horrific. Yugoslavia l, but instead of three or four distinct groups, there will be three or four hundred. It will be pot luck to who you end up falling in with. You might not like your local band of communists but when they turn off the water supply you’ll learn to love them. Conversely, you might find that a group you completely agree with that are ten miles down the road from you consider everyone in your town a scumbag and a traitor and will shoot you in the face
