The angle isn't going to be that steep for it to exit so low from only approx. 400~ ft away. Also, I'd like to add a few other points too consider (just to encourage investigating all possibilities). The windows being referenced as the shooting site are large and unopenable, they form the walls of the hallways those catwalk-like buildings are designed to be. Even if they weren't, it is extremely likely the rifle had a suppressor attached, based off direct audio captured during the shooting, and also (apparently) reported early on by news outlets or some other local information sources. I won't say decisively that a suppressor can be, or has been, visually identified by an eyewitness or through a recording of the shooter- I will say that in recordings of the shooter, the object that can be barely seen resembling a rifle, does appear to have some excessive barrel length in proportion to the rest of the "rifle's" silhouette, with what can also barely be recognized as the barrel's shape widening in diameter towards its end.

To your point about the window: the suppressor would contain and conceal any muzzle flash like what you're suggesting. However, for the sake of the argument- if it wasn't suppressed, then there would certainly be some other form of visual identifier of the gun firing. Specifically, a cloud of gunsmoke coming off a cold bore rifle like that, and possibly even hinged blue and thicker because the rifle was probably properly cleaned and checked over before it was brought on stage for it's "big moment". The distance wouldn't factor much in whether or not we'd see something like that in video, because the distance between that railing and window to Kirk is down to a couple dozen feet at most.

The type of ammunition used would change some of the signatures, tell-tales, damage type, and how much of that damage was dealt to certain materials. I.E. With all of that explained, bullets still do wild shit regardless, but assuming a specialized bullet performs perfectly- the neck would be the most difficult place to hit a target and then try to analyze the bullet's behavior, simply because there isn't much "canvas" for the bullet to "paint" on. The neck is so thin, offers such little distance from one end to the other, and has such little resistance to a penetrative force like a bullet- that, there isn't hardly any time for the bullet to "get to work" and there isn't much target matter to observe and analyze to crossreference with anyways. A.K.A. you could fire a fucking slightly rounded cylinder piece rock from a gun into a neck, and forensics would probably have a pretty tough time figuring out exactly what "caliber" you used and what type if "specialized ammo" you used.

In this scenario in particular, the variables that actually changes the most and reveals the most about the shot made- is impact and departure. The kinetic energy of the bullet as it hits and the effect along with the intensity of the shockwaves it causes, as there's going to be a lot more of that, and a lot more change depending on shot factors- way more so then the shape of the entry and exits wounds (which won't be accurate anyways due to the vibrational tearing and kinetic energy entering and escaping when and how it decides to), and also the bullet's flight path theoretically, but like I mentioned earlier- the neck is a pretty bad spot for providing as much flight time and path trajectory as one would need to notice any huge differences in ammo type.

We had a thread about this before (sort of) we examined videos with different angles of the shooting and determined that the shooter was on the UVU Career Development Center building (pic related shows this but is not from the thread). There was also a video showing a the shooter running from the rooftop almost immediately after the shooting. Now there are two ways the shooter could have gotten to the roof, he could have climbed from a ladder or gone through the building. One of those is more likely to me personally but both are equally possible depending on when the shooter got onto the roof and if he was working alone. The building was also remodeled in 09 so it most likely has cameras in and around it, or at least perhaps near the entrance. If they went through the building the shooter most likely had a key or at least some way to open the door on the roof. One thing that I have not looked into is the level of set up the went into the event. How long was the tent there, how long was Kirk’s event known/planned. As these could allow to understand what level of premeditation and planning went into this. I am still adamant that this was not some lone ideological gunman but a glowie ordered to create a martyr and Kirk was perfect for the role. Utah is a glowie hive after all.
