At 200 yards? Extremely easy. If you do the bare minimum and zero your rifle at 100 yards the bullet drop you will have at a target 200 yards away is going to be less than 4 inches. Additionally with a bog standard 9 power scope you can see your target very well. Half of the population of the United States could reliably make that shot.

30 06 is the preferred dear cartridge around my parts. Its a serious 30 cal round, similar to a 308.

Well depending on the zero. All of my hunting rifles are zeroed for 200 yards, but where I tend to hunt that is the max distance I would ever need to take a shot. I can see people in Utah maybe zeroing for 300 yards and further. The bare minimum is usually a 100 yard zero, and if that was the case then yeah he was probably aiming at the head.

What I saw on the video is perfectly consistent with a full power rifle round. I was saying in other threads that I expected it to either be a lever gun or a bolt action of some flavor. When the kill video landed I suspected the caliber to have either been .308, .45-70, or maybe 7.62 or 10mm. My bets were hedged mostly on .308.
I guess .30-06 was close enough, but I'm surprised its a refurb/sporterized mauser. I guess the loonytroon must have gotten it from some kind of estate sale like Anon mentioned, or a pawn shop, or maybe he just stole it or it was given to him by a family member.
I obviously can't prove this, but I suspect that it was given to him by the old man who acted as the distraction while he escaped. 30-06 has a lot of options for loads, anywhere from 125 to 180 grains, but regardless with a 100 yard zero they are all around 3-4 inches of drop at 200 yards and 12-14 at 400 yards according to the reloading book I just looked at. I think people are making too much of bullet drop, distance, and even shooting angle from an elevated position. If it was the Mauser, it is like a 2 moa rifle at best. The idea of every rifle made being 1 moa is a relatively recent one. The idea of every cartridge being capable of moa accuracy is also flawed. Older rifles, even bolt actions considered accurate for their time, coupled with hunting ammo rather than ammo made to reliably punch paper that may only offer 2 moa accuracy, proved very effective tools for well over a century out to two hundred yards and further. If it was a 200 yards shot, with 4 inchs of drop, a 2 moa rifle (4 inch @ 200 yards) and ammo that wasn't handloaded and the same load used when sighting in the rifle, then I would say with zero stress at all shooting off a bench at a range a group under 4 inches would be peak performance, with an expectation of the 8 inch groups in the field (@200). Anyone who has ever done any amount of shooting knows, especially when you have a live target, the shooter is the one who creates deviations from the ability of the gun, usually through flinching, breathing, improper trigger pull. Any corrections for elevation made at that distance would also only change aiming point by less than inch.

You run your math depending on the angle, regardless of what round you are shooting, you get the same number, like .8 for 30 degrees (don't remember for sure, that might actually be close though) then multiply your 200 yards by .8 for 160 yards. Your trajectory from 160 yards to 200 yards is going to be less than an inch. At 600 yards you would adjust to a shot as if it was 480 yards, which would be well over a foot if not a lot more for a 30-06, which starts to drop considerably after 300 yards. Angle really isn't even worth calculating in under 2-300 yards, depending on the round.

At 100 meters, in the prone supported (laying down with the rifle propped up on something steady), no scope, and a much smaller bullet (5.56 is much smaller and less accurate than .30-06) and a non-moving target, I am easily hitting 10/10 targets every time. No there isn't, retard, it depends on the rifle setup & zero, but typically you're going to see the bullet rise initially and then drop to dead on point of impact = point of aim at your zero distance, because the gun is literally angled slightly upwards (picrel). This lets you have 2 zero points (one as the bullet goes above your sight-line at first, then a second going below your sight-line later on), creating a more predictable impact.
Here's an example with 308 for a 200 meter zero. Picrel is 5.56 but it's the same concept applied everywhere.

You will not not find any other FMJ .30-06 for sale. M1 ball isn't fragmenting, shit even nato standard 7.62 doesn’t fragment.
