Most of the time it's less than 30 yards - you have to go to a special long rifle range for targets over 100, and 200-300 yards is where it starts getting challenging.

I'm not a great shot. I have a bolt action(Mossberg Patriot) and can hit a target pretty easily at 100 yards. 150 yards and it becomes more challenging, 200 yards is definitely doable with the right equipment (decent scope, stabled position/prone, zeroed correctly, you got a few inches of bullet drop to account for).

A really skilled marksman can hit a target at 400, but at that point, it becomes a whole other ballgame - You have to have secondary indicators of wind, you have to have your breathing game on point, etc...ultra-high ranges (800+ you start needing to do some science, you have to account for the Coriolis effect, significant bullet drop, you're going to need a ballistics chart...)

I've never even shot below 300 yards hunting. Its just a technique thing. But being able to do that under pressure, like this shooter apparently did, isn't just something anyone can do. I recall missing a deer at 350 yards three times my first year before finally hitting it because I was being watched and super nervous about missing it and disappointing my dad, embarrassing myself in front of my cousins etcetera. Doing something like this would amplify that a thousand fold in a regular person. This is the more plausible argument for it being a professional job, they didn't choke and miss like anyone doing this for the first time would have. Unless you consider the statistical unlikelihood that they're just a natural born killer with ice for blood.

On a 50cm target, I can hit the 20cm (~7.87inch) black portion of it from 200 yards literally every single time with this specific 7,62x39 rifle with iron sights.

In fact, the regular rifle type shooting test is 12 rounds to changing targets which you have 3 seconds to shoot when they pop up, 4 of which from 150m (165yd) prone, 4 from 150m on the knee, and 4 from 50m (65yd) standing up.
And I can make the 12/12 over 50% of the time, and never hit less than 10.

And no im not some special operator just a regular guy. It is not hard if you have good eyesight.
