Tourist from /biz/ here so go easy on me. I don't really want a world where at any given moment an unhinged rando can walk up and shoot me in the neck and fatherless my kids. If I could snap my fingers and make all guns go away and never come back today I would, but that's obviously not realistic and I live in a country where people really like their guns.

At the same time, I also live in a country with insanely high gun violence, gun related deaths and murders, the only place where school shootings and mass shootings are a regular thing, and where it's very easy for anyone to get a gun in a lot of states.

What is the actual solution to controlling gun violence in the USA and ensuring the average citizen can walk safely in the streets, a public figure can speak in front of a crowd, and children can go to school without getting getting gun-murdered?

That's a very wide spectrum. I'm probably "mentally disordered" in some ways but I am confident I wouldn't shoot anyone with a gun unless I had no choice. A lot of seemingly normal, balanced people can also be triggered to do extreme things when under certain types of duress.

I don't think a lot of people understand that even if the US followed the example of Australia, which had an ~20% buyback rate, we would still have about double the amount of guns as we have cars in the US.

The simple thing to do would be to hold people responsible if a gun they own is used in a crime, provided that gun hasn’t been reported stolen. An overwhelming percentage of these shootings done by gun people under the age of 30 are done by someone stealing their parents gun. If you aren’t a responsible gun owner then you should be held just as responsible as if they committed the shooting themselves.

You don't really understand though, the problem has never been AR15s and Semiautomatics in general even or whether or not those who own them are good or bad. The problem is all firearm access and our political climate enabling such easy ownership that makes killing people as easy as snapping your finger. Kirk was shot by a bolt action hunting rifle that would've been legal in every state and damn near every country in the Europe, including places like the UK where firearms are heavily restricted. The truth is, buying a gun in general, for both good people and bad people needs to be substantially more difficult in general. There is a thin line that separates a good from an evil person and all it takes is a couple bad days for that line to disappear. Pragmatically, there is probably no solution to this problem, if you wanted to stop the mass ownership of guns you'd need a time machine and if you wanted to stop polarization, you'd need that same time machine to ban most immigration, the internet, stop the growth of online video/social media platforms, and probably stifle free speech, this is unfortunately the natural conclusion of our set of values.
