His question about gang violence actually is relevant to such a discussion, since if you include gang violence (which even the left mentally writes off as "niggers gonna nig" even if they won't admit it), then troons make up a very small fraction of mass shooters. If you exclude gang violence to talk about what the popular image of "mass shooting" is (a loony shooting up a grocery store or church) then troons are a much larger percentage. His follow-up would likely have been a phrasing of that palatable to a college audience.
