It's weird since myspace started getting big when I was at school, but me and my friends never used it despite otherwise being completely immersed in internet culture.

Social media was associated with certain subcultures at our school so it became part of the subculture tribalism similar to clothing, music, sports etc. Showing of every aspect of your life never appealed to us because it was just vain/faggy, and it was always ingrained into us never to share anything personal with strangers on the internet. We already had instant messengers, MMO guild chat etc to organize irl shit so social media didn't really provide us with any new functionality on that front. A huge part of why MMOs declined is because social media took over many of their non-gaming roles. In fact the rise of discord and messaging apps is basically a reversion to that older pre-facebook mode of online socializing.
