There are about 11k firearm related homocides in the US yearly, minus gang violence because we know gangs will not follow the law and continue to use firearms.

those 11k also include self-defense use.

Handguns are far more dangerous than rifles as they're much more easy to conceal. Upwards of 90% of homicides in The United States are committed with handguns, and roughly half of those are committed by non-whites. It's the opposite of a rifle issue, it's just that these high profile assassinations/mass killings are committed with rifles, so you hear about them more.

Every civilian is too wide, but being able to defend the nation fits the original definition of a citizen. It's still happening exactly like that in Switzerland. Even if you're 50yo, if you manage to become a Swiss citizen (which is not easy) you have to take military classes to be part of the militia. Only countries that fear their own citizens don't do that.

So, you want regulations like it Canada? Have a back ground check made on you before you get a license to buy a gun? That makes sense to me if you want to prevent schizos/criminals from getting guns. I live in Missouri and I can carry open, concealed, however I want as long as the property I'm on doesn't specify a firearm is not allowed. I can even park in a restricted area but inside my vehicle I can still have my weapon. It feels pretty safe. The problem is not guns, it's the people.

I agree that the problem is those who wield the weapon, but a gun is merely a self-defence tool. I see no purpose as to why a person would require an automatic high-capacity assault rifle or an anti-material rifle, or hand grenades and explosives/launchers.
A handgun is compact and all one needs to defend themselves.
