The way I see it is that most people considered themselves moderates because they wanted to mantain a sense of civility, decency and trying to find the middle ground.
This assassination showed all these people that they will be labeled enemies and fascists no matter how moderate they are, so might as well play the part.

Simply holding ground has long been a losing battle. Even if that's what you want to achieve it you need to pull far in the opposite direction so "resonable compromise" is what you actually want rather than progressively losing more and more ground.
