If he had been less reactive he could have finished it off with a taser, or it might not have got confrontational in the first place (unlikely but possible).
The best life skill you develop besides being physically fit is the ability to manage your own adrenalin level and not key into someone else's aggressive energy. If you can stay calm under provocation you buy yourself a lot more decision time and can often head off the violence altogether.
