The children get lost after the birds eat their breadcrumbs which Hensel had dropped. The children have tried their best and were already totally abandoned when they rewched their house. Personally I believe the stones (illuminated by the moonlight) which Hänsel first used to be ahrimanic forces, which keep you rooted in the world but hinder progress, and the breadcrumbs (which are eaten by the birds) to be lucuferian influences, which mislead you to abandon your physical reality.
Also their dad doesn't leave their original mother, she dies of natural courses beforehand.

That's an interesting take i've never considered. The step mom keeps casting spells onto the children and dad to keep them within her power, which could be interpreted by a Lucrefian influence. I wonder what the fire that Gretal is asked to stick her palm into represents. I haven't thought of any decent symbolism for that yet
