America was founded by literally the most radical christians who were thrown out of England they were so radical and creating so many problems.
The original Quakers believed that smiling was a sin, that enjoying things was a sin, that your whole life should be spent suffering in brutal toil. Religion has been a huge fascination for americans for its entire history. It is definitely not an atheist country, very much the opposite. Americans even created several american strains of christianity, most predominantly Mormonism
