They're not trying to be honest, they're trying to set the narrative. I've spoken to some of my more "normie" friends who, despite leaning right, don't pay much attention to politics of the news, and they said they heard he was on the right and came from a Republican family.
They're trying to flood the media with misinformation before the story recedes from the front page, establishing their falsehood as "truth" in the minds of the uninformed majority. It's blatant dishonesty and they know they're wrong, but they also know that if they can "disarm" the damning reality by obfuscating within the critical period of public attention.
These "people" cannot be reasoned with, and they are the enemy. You cannot live in a society with them, and they must be named and exiled. Do not stoop to their level and pursue violence. That does not mean to be naïve and defenseless, but to maintain the moral high ground. That is how we win.

"Bella Ciao," for example, is being cited as some Groyper meme because it appeared on a completely unofficial and unendorsed Spotify playlist with a couple hundred saves made by a rando. In reality, the song is one of the top songs associated with anti-fascists. The "hey fascist, catch (Helldivers bomb)" is an insane spin as well, as it's clearly implying throwing a bomb at a fascist.
The people spreading these narratives know how incorrect they are, but they're playing to the ignorance of the masses. The masses' reception to information ultimately comes from quantity rather than quality, so leftists are flooding social media with lies before the official narrative coalesces and their position becomes completely untenable. The time it took for authorities to catch the shooter has been their greatest boon, because they took advantage of the haziness to craft and disseminate their lies.
It's also of note that large outlets like the NYT quickly reported on the shooter coming from a Republican family living in a small conservative town in Southern Utah, but didn't simultaneously report the statements by the shooters' peers and family about him being an aggressive leftist in spite of this background. You don't hate journalists enough.
I'm not a particular fan of Fuentes, but he doesn't advocate for violence, and he's already been targeted multiple times. It's irresponsible, and leftists are only trying to place more targets while garnering public support for, or at least indifference to, their future crimes.
