Over the past couple of days I’ve seen videos fly by of drone attacks on Russian oil refineries I’ve heard it in the news and wondered to myself how long will Putin allow this to happen?

According to the news Ukraine is hitting a whopping 10% of Russia’s oil by doing these drone attacks on their refineries but also on their oil transportation.

Obviously Russia will not run out of oil very easily as they are ranked 8th globally and hold 4.85% of worlds proven reserves as in 2016.

2025, its crude oil production was approximately 9.17 million barrels per day, and in May 2025, it was 9.818 million barrels per day.
I can see what Zelenskyy is trying to do here he’s trying to hit Russia where it hurts them the most and it does influence the economy because the gas stations are flooded with cars and the price has gone up exponentially.

How long will Putin allow this?

ukraine will be so utterly and unimaginably buck-shattered and demoralize there will be absolutely no "will" or ability to mount some insane terrorist campaign

There really is no "air defense" against waves of mostly radar-transparent fiberglass and balsa wood drones flying at treetop level. NATO has no air defense that could deal with them. Russia has no air defense that could deal with them. Etc.

To deal with waves of drones will require investment in laser defense weapons, which would need to produced in great numbers as laser energy rapidly degrades in the atmosphere. Loitering lasers on airplanes is a possibility too but of course open to attack.

So instead of shooting down the drones, which nobody can reliably do when they come in huge waves, you do what Russia is doing which is hitting factories and depots and infrastructure making it harder to produce and deploy them. Of course with the open border with NATO nations, there is no way to stop the inflow of drones completely.

Most Ukrainian drones get intercepted (see pic), it's just that Ukraine makes more drones than before. Also note that the reason that Ukrainian drones can get past Russian air defenses at all is because NATO AWACS maps paths for them to avoid interference from electronic warfare.

Russian air defenses are improving with new Pantsir mini-missiles (old ones weren't mean for small drones), interceptor drones, and laser air defense.

The main way in which Russia will deter Ukrainian strikes is a countervalue campaign where they destroy targets of much greater value like the bridges on the Dnipro river and power plants (including nuclear power plants).
