Dorner was an LAPD cop that went rogue and started picking off other cops he claimed were corrupt. He accused a female officer of brutalising a schizophrenic, kicking him in the torso and face after he was cuffed during a disturbance. The schizo couldn't testify in his own defence and following further accusations of excessive force by Dorner, including ones directed at other cops (sometimes about racially motivated abuse) he was fired. He then took the law into his own hands. He declared "unconventional and asymmetric warfare" and went to work.
Dorner didn't have a history of mental illness or crime. He chose to join the police as a teen, served as a reservist in the navy and once found around $14,000 in missing church funds, siting integrity as to why he returned it. He likely went on his vigilante spree entirely out of his own sense of justice and to regain his honour. The LAPD freaked out as you know and his new career ended quick. Dorner died when his hideout caught fire after being cornered by the police with his official cause of death being suicide. Some anons believe the cops set the fire on purpose (they were very rattled). Others think the corpse found in the ashes wasn't Dorner's and he's still out there today. Either way the LAPD learned its lesson: don't hire quiet guys who talk a lot about justice.
