Wtf does communism have to do with anything? It was cheap because it was state sponsored, and you couldn't just buy what you wanted. That was the caveat, nevermind if you had something nice pre communism, you ended up losing it.
China also has cheap housing, but why do people in China have the same property issues?
Aus has had a low population but high income, which meant more wealth for boomers to park in real estate. The primary wealth driver for boomers is property, and it growing props up sectors of the economy while condemning people starting out to being permanent renters

Nobody wants to live in a shitbox, the idea in countries like Finland was that you start your career in a cheap shitbox and work yourself towards a proper house.
