Why is Africa so backwards compared to the rest of the world? Why didn't it evolve like Europe?
The colonialism argument is wearing a bit thin, isn't it? I understand it has some validity, but even before colonialism, Africa did not evolve like Europe. Why is Africa still largely dominated by tribes and some honestly barbaric practices, lip plates, teeth modification, raping virgins to heal men of AIDS. One theory I read is that since the climate of Africa was warm and hunting was easy, there was not as much of a need to invent farming mechanisms etc. like the Europeans did. Also that there were waterfalls and long rivers along the borders of many countries, preventing individuals from venturing out or other individuals from coming in. Genuinely curious, trying to learn. Also, what are the major hurdles facing Africa today? Many of the countries are still largely illiterate and without doctors.

The short version is that evolution works by selecting traits that promote survival.

In Africa, to survive as a human you don't need much. Wake up, go find some fruits or a root or something to eat, or if you feel particularly eager, go hunt some game.
Occasionally, you have to run away from some animal, so this promotes genes associated with sprinting.

In Europe, you can't just wake up and figure out what to eat, because you won't survive winters. You need to plan, think ahead: "the weather is changing, I better start collecting wood now before everything is covered in snow". Genes that promote cooperation: "I will need some salt to conserve meat too, so I will trade some of my wood for the salt my neighbor has collected".

Fast forward to today and that explains why Europeans are the way we are, and Africans are the way they are.

Africans live in the instant, Europeans plan ahead.
This explains everything, including why African-Americans don't bother changing the battery in their smoke detectors.

the mediterranean allowed for easy travel and wide communication. cultures clashed and grew and adapted. in the civilization game, getting ahead means you get even more ahead. you learn to walk and then run and then sprint before they've even had time to learn to crawl. sub saharan africa just lost the geographical lottery one too many times.
