Because the US is so big, roads and rail have have to go through thousands of miles of deep red rural areas. It only takes one man to derail a train. It only takes one man with a backhoe to cut off water to a city. It only takes a few men with access to heavy equipment to block a road. It only takes a small team of men with earthmoving equipment to take out a bridge.

What do you suppose the political leanings are of the men who do these dirty dangerous jobs? Oh sure you've got the office people but who fixes the power grid? Who keeps the water running? Who picks up your trash? Who repairs the roads/bridges? Who works in the refineries/oil fields?
