Private farms is a myth only mega corps are suffering from this. And the private farms that do exist entirely survive on government corn subsidies.

We've been post-scarcity in basic foodstuffs for a long time now. If we weren't, theoretically buyers should be queuing up for that now available surplus. And honestly traditional farms are probably a little bit outdated and could be replaced with large urban towers and greenhouses using geothermal and nuclear power.

Farmers have been complicit in the destruction of our arable land and food supply. It's not entirely their fault because it's easy to make bad decisions when those are the only decisions that allow your family to eat for the next year. On the whole though, their entire attitude towards regenerative agriculture and practices that preserve the health of the land is one of contempt. I grew up around farmers who used diesel for weedkiller before glyphosate and laughed at me when I told them they probably shouldn't be spraying it near their crops. These same farmers use used motor oil, gear ouls, whatever to treat the posts that they use for fencing around their crops or to hold up trellis wire. I could go on and on about all of the practices that are destructive to the health, safety, and longevity of our food supply and most farmers fight it ever step of the way because they just want to till, sow, fertilize, irrigate, and dump pesticides and herbicides on monocropped fields because that's what's easy.

Not everybody was born to be a surgeon. My neighbor's son was very happy working seasonal labor. His favorite was to pick strawberries. They'd let him take home as much as he wanted, so he'd take home a couple of pounds for his mom to make into jam. He just stays at home now doing nothing because nobody will hire him anymore. These farms are generally owned by only one or two huge companies, so when one of these companies stops hiring American, several job opportunities dry up. These companies prefer the migrant workers because they basically have no rights. They can work them overtime without additional pay, turn a blind eye to their children coming along to help, skimp on work safety measures, and just treat them like shit in general. They really don't even pay them all that much less. What they do get is to not pay overtime, get free labor from their children, and save money letting equipment repairs slide or other things.

It's not small farmers screaming about needing the cheap labor. It's huge companies like Tyson or whatever who bought the farms screaming for slave labor to fluff their profits.
