Our government funded a "safe loan 2%" programme for young people who wanted to buy apartments/houses, subsidizing their bank committment. Real estate prices shot through the roof and the money basically went to greedy developers and banks, paid for by the average citizen. The total cost was 16 billion PLN, or 4 billion USD (back in 2023 when it happened).

The newly elected government wanted to go through with a "safe loan 0%" version, but people were pissed off and started digging up donations from companies to the ruling party so it got canned. Lots of developers continued building apartments thinking their ministerial lapdogs would pull through, but it never happened.

Now there's a bit of a China-lite situation here with empty real estate rotting away and being sold for speculative purposes instead.
