Sure sounds like he said the right wing were trying very hard to make the shooter come across as someone that wasn't also right wing leaning. Wasn't set up as a joke, he just said it nonchalantly. This statement was said during the Monday taping of the show that aired later that evening. Plenty of information had already come out prior to then that the family and his friends had already said he had become far more involved in left leaning politics prior to the shooting. The audience didn't even respond to what he said, so he immediately moved on to the comment about Trump not appearing to care that Kirk was killed. It should be noted that the type of person willing to sit in on this show's taping wouldn't care.
