Civilized life only feels bad and doesn't make sense anymore because it is no longer bounded by uncivilized behavior on all sides, both to defend it and to expand it as necessary.
A castle is no castle if it is not surrounded by walls.
Colonialism, almost always of the violent variety, was the mechanism that made 19th and 18th century civilized societies possible in the first place.
Here's how it goes:
>Technological innovation makes comfort and stability possible
>Comfort and stability lead to increased birth rates
>Crowded societies mean less economic and mating opportunity for men
>This creates resource scarcity, societal instability, and the potential for violence
>There are only two possible outlets for this tension:
>Violence at home (universally undesirable)
>Colonial expansion (preferable)
The natural outlet for social and economic overcrowding in European societies was for people to leave and stake claims to lands and find wives abroad. These people were *overwhelmingly* unmarried men. Soldiers. Hunters/fishermen. Traders and tradesmen. The narrative of families doing this is vastly overemphasized.
All of the sudden, starting in the late 19th century, we sort of collectively shifted and decided that "we're better than that".
Except we aren't. Men started it, but women drove the nail into the coffin when they were given a share of the electorate.
Colonialism is a behavior that's necessary to uplift the men of any society, and to alleviate the potential for unrest that naturally arises in any economically stable and healthy society.
Like so many things, women opine on it but have absolutely zero stake in the outcome. In fact, it can be argued that they enjoy the opposite more. When and where there is male-driven civil unrest, the result is that men are fighting over women even harder, and women have even more options. Instinctively and unconsciously, they understand that colonialism alleviates this, and so they oppose it.
