The founding fathers and others expressed all of this ages ago. John Adams stated plainly that the constitution serves a god-fearing people and no other. The federalist papers explained that our form of government worked only because we elected people who served as the better angels of our nature, so to speak. Neither of these components has been meaningfully present in generations, and so no wonder it's going downhill. The unfortunate truth is that only an idea of America remains for the most part -- the moral, social, and political machinery, the infrastructure, that is necessary to see it realized is wholly lacking. This problem exists on both "sides" of the political spectrum as we understand it today but with naturally different solutions. If we could establish a "my side your side" paradigm we MIGHT have a shot at seeing things through without serious conflict. Barring that, it really will be as that image suggests: the zero-sum political game we are locked in will be seen as having increasingly dire stakes wherein one side will need to wholly snuff out the other before they do likewise.
