Communism was never meant to work. The entire communism theory is a strawman seething about imagined capitalism and framing all ills of society as capitalism. It's impotent seething mostly at ownership and trade, mixed with some legit criticisms about scammers and usury.
Communism doesn't offer any solutions or alternatives.
Stalin took this insane ideology and he used it as a tool to murder the royal family and seize all wealth, not to redistribute it but to take it all for himself. He and the people who came after him used their immense wealth to fund similar takeovers in other countries.

They all collapse due to the same reason. Some rich insane violence person takes the power and steal all the wealth under the guise of some communist revolution. This new person kills the previous government so no one knows how to run the country. Farmers get fucked by the government taking all their food and having them starve to death. The entire supply chain collapses, all the systems in place that ensured food gets produced and gets to other people is dismantled and then mass famines start.
After enough deaths they scramble to put together a government and they put the old systems in place that are identical to what they had before and things return to normal while communists pat themselves on the back and claim it's communism and thank themselves for saving the country. These communist leaders then die of old age and you are back at square one.
That's communism 101. It has happened every time it was tried.

Libertarianism would work, but you would need to strictly practice eugenics to ensure that only those truly capable of handling freedom responsibly are part of it. I think people get stuck on one idea politically, the correct political system needs to flip during different times of need, libertarian in times of peace and when all is well, allowing everyone to thrive, and then rallying together in what I guess you would call a fascistic manner to protect the society when needed.

The truth is that communism is a religion, and religions are remarkably ineffective at governance.

Religions never have practical objectives, but rather philosophical and moral objectives. When religions try to govern, the idealism might drive the revolutionaries to overthrow the old order, but over the long term, it becomes pretty clear that the people in charge cannot possibly usher in the end times or cause utopia to become real, and that really the best they can come up with is to use the playbook of the people they just overthrew. Over time, people question the narrative when they see the "good guys" committing atrocities and behaving like pigs.
