I'm not an American but I doubt the democrats will be in power ever again. They've made themselves both a laughing stock and a villain at the same time. I think there will be some other party that will rise to challenge the republicans. Hopefully several, some to the right of the republicans and some to their left. There is no reason America can't evolve into a multi party system, and there's no reason we can't evolve into a 2 party system. Winner takes all applies here as well if you get a majority vote.

Believe it or not, the healthiest democracy is one where there are 2 or very few parties, and they are extremely close to each other. That doesn't mean that a 2 party system automatically means a healthy democracy, but a healthy democracy always has very few parties. That's because in the best democracy, the things that the majority agrees on, are supported by both parties, and settled in policy. There is no need to waste debate over those topics. So what remains would only be small topics and new topics, where it's still unclear what the majority opinion is.
