Just about every segment with Jenny was designed to make you feel some amount of sorrow especially her backstory. For most of the film forest is offering her unconditional love and for his entire life she rejects him, ultimately spending very little time with her past childhood (to make matters worse he can barely even comprehend why it's happening). It was designed as a tragedy; one sided relationships like that are not romantic and the brief flash we see at the end with his child is followed by her death. I think we can agree it is a great film though.
