Digital ID because of Russia China and Iran
Many years ago I predicted the only way western governments can stop this behaviour is to implement digital ID. I said: at some point the government will have had enough of the propaganda launched against us and (try to) kill it by tagging everyone who uses the internet. This week, the UK is doing just that. They will say it's about children's safety and to keep your banking apps safe but it's really about narrative control.

I mean, wouldn't it be interesting to see who's actually who behind the posts? I'm half tempted to support internet ID laws if only because normies ruin fucking everything. Given complete social anonymity, they start talking about bringing back the third reich and generally just act like the most credulous morons who ever lived. The damage may already be done, though. People are already so poisoned against one another that they might genuinely not care that a lot of the division was initially fomented and amplified by Russia and China.

Keep in mind that the fact the government is talking to us all about this means they likely have very good evidence that not only is the problem widespread but that it can't deal with it with current tools. The irony is that the voices doing the lion's share of the division are in a great position to take advantage of the current division to preserve their position. It's like they have a vote in it themselves kek

>total control of information
Not necessarily. Just total accountability. Like others say, it's likely impossible to really implement unless countries get serious about intranets like China's... and, yeah, government control looms large. At the same time, protections of e.g. the press have never been anything but government honor system and they've managed to remain diverse (at least in print) across the West.

I'm mostly just agreeing with Starmer that there's a big problem with disinformation campaigns being astroturfed by our biggest rivals that's approaching an information coup.

Sadly, I think 'fighting adversarial propaganda' and AI slop, will force a complete deanonymization of the internet. No accounts without government ID, no connectivity without it either, open access points illegal, and so on.
Long story short, accountability is impossible with anonymity, and the government wants to charge certain people with crimes. The internet as a whole will soon change.

Dude voting is real.
I know damn well there are tons of people who are unbelievably retarded.
Even in the face of blatant facts, they are proned to propaganda like you cant believe.

Observing these people over the years, i only had one conclusion, these normies, these wagecuck slaves ARE MEANT TO BE EXPLOITED.

They are no different than barnyard animals, you use them for what you need.

During the last election, the president that won made it clear as day, that they would increase taxes, that they would ask the social apps for censorship and that they want immigrants. That they might have to sell some public companies because of the national debt.

But they shouted enough times that the opposing side (the nationalists) are anti EU and are pro Russian that they won.

DUDE, you cannot tell me these are sentient human beings, these normies. And i was speaking with them, and they themselves believed that the nationalists are russian spies and that Russia will enter Romania any day if we vote against the pro-eu side.

I don't see a way forward without some kind of accountability. The problem is just too severe -- it's too easy for countries like Russia and China to very effectively astroturf a lot of chaos into the West. Our prior stance may have been a product of its time: that the fundamental superiority of the Western system would be its own testament and the fall of the USSR would be the natural consequence.

I mean, it was always bullshit anyway -- we absolutely pulled our own influence ops. The problem is that China and Russia are winning the information war. All of their strongest enemies are currently eating each other alive. The US, the UK, Germany with its own alt-right insurgency, now apparently Holland, etc.

They're dominating us in the asymmetrical warfare space. Something has to break. And you know that if/when the West falls to this chaos, it's not like China and Russia are going to be benevolent towards us. They're going to exploit their advantage and we end up with an even worse version of authoritarianism than we would have if we reversed course tomorrow.

I'm just not feeling very optimistic. We're barely even talking about this, so invested we are in our global culture wars against ourselves.

Look, I'm not going to get pigeonholed into defending The Government in all the things it does. Not everything the government does is wrong on account of being done by the government. If you have some persecution complex because you believe in a conspiracy theory, I'm not gonna blow smoke up your ass and pretend it's a valid, evidenced viewpoint. If it's true on the very marginal off chance that the CIA does actually have listening devices hidden in your walls, I'm sorry that's happening to you, but the overall point here is on Russia and China.

We have to make a basic assumption that the government is going to try fundamentally to govern in our best interest, even if it does frequently find ways to privilege e.g. big business and politicians' special friends over our own welfare. At the very least, we have to assume that our government will prioritize our interests, being nominally accountable to us, more than Russia and China will... neither of which are directly accountable to us in any way. Nothing else is logical.

>And who decides what is 'disinformation'
No one. That's the elegance of simple identification. If we know who everyone is, we can see for ourselves that Li Hongping from Wuxiang has been, for example, posting very aggressively about how all leftists need to die and America should enact the fourth reich in response to the death of a podcaster. The goal always has to be exposure. We need to give people the tools to see for themselves how much they're being influenced and trust that people will choose independence once these putative networks of disinformation and influence campaigns are unveiled.

That's the "pro" argument, anyway.

Clearly the best way to deal with russia, china and iran is to store all of our personal details on numerous third party verification databases that those groups can all either hack and create a national security nightmare or more likely just ask the corporation for the data and get sold it.

Yeah the best way to defeat them is to give all of our citizens personal details to every corporation in existance

Digital ID will not just be used online
But also as a real life drm check that keeps a record of everywhere you signed in with it.
So when you go to the shop and buy alcohol your id is scanned into a database instead of the clerk just looking at it.

Also considering in my country the current excuse is the ids are to reduce illegal immigration, that implys that these id checks will be in places they werent previously, because the muslims arent exactly going to the pub.
