I'm going to give you the real answer; just in case anyone wants to know...

Christianity, like most religions, exist within the framework of a moral transaction; where God tells the people how to act; and receive a reward in exchange for acting in the designated way.

What gives Christianity its authority is the belief that Jesus was the foretold Messiah; and the evidence which is used to prove this is the older Jewish texts.

So... We follow Christian beliefs because Jesus told us to. He has the right to guide us because he was the messiah, and he was the messiah because he fulfilled all of the requirements laid out in the Jewish texts.

So of course there has to be a certain level of respect and authority given to the Jewish texts; because that's what ultimately gives Jesus the authority to be the messiah.
