A growing number of men are living alone in barely furnished apartments like this.

Is this bad for society?

A lot of people think their life is terrible because of something called the hedonic treadmill, you get used to how great your
life is. No one had a hot shower until about 50 years ago. So I try to do this thing when you stand in a hot shower, just pause for a moment and think: "No one you admire from 100 years ago had this simple pleasure in life."

We are in the top percentile in terms of the luck that we have had, the lives, the caloric intake we just take for granted, the fact that our children don't die in the first year, modern medicine, the entertainment we have. We're living like kings. And yet, life has never been objectively better and subjectively worse. Why? because human desires are mimetic we copy what others want.

So really, your happiness is: Your quality of life minus envy. That's how happy you are. And it's easy to look at everyone else and how they are doing and not take pleasure in what you have.

That's not a very optimal setup. The couch should be replaced by a folding futon with mattress that doubles as a bed, which is far more portable and could easily be packed into a small car. The TV and TV stand both could be replaced with a good projector screen, which would give a much superior viewing (especially at that distance) and again, be far more portable.

The opposite, it's good for society. It usually takes men a lifetime to realize that the trappings of this world mean nothing; and that the only thing that matters is their mind.

If you discover minimalism at an early age; if you refuse to run on the treadmill of overpriced useless gadgets and invented competition with your next door neighbor, you'll be much happier in life.

I redid one of my bathrooms, and when you see a guy resolder a new shower valve (little copper pipes and a blow torch), it hits you how magical all this shit is.

You have cold and hot water, sewer, a mirror, waterproof tile flooring, and HVAC in a little bathroom. Unthinkable for most of history.

I agree and disagree with your post, however. Most men seek status. We compete for status. It's fine line between striving / motivation and envy.

> birthrates
The nesting is what the wife and mother does. A single man his no interest in women's things

But to answer your question... in American baseball there is something called a 'sacrifice fly' where a player intentionally loses their place on base in order to advance others further around the bases.

The same thing socially is going on in the world right now. At least two generations of women were raised to expect only the best; and have issued demands to the men of the world of what their minimum is. The men of the world have collectively read their demands, and have declined their offer to compete for them. The declining marriage and birth rates now will be replaced in 20 years by a boom in marriage and birth; as a bunch of young women look around at all of the bitter, never-married, angry karin spinsters; and realize that life would be much easier if they hooked a guy while they still had a chance.

Striving is good but only as far as it leads you to objectively upgrade what you are, aka doing scientific research or having a meaningful life by pumping out a lot of babies and teaching them how to be strong (in order to continue the life cycle of our species).
What I mean by this is that the corporate rat-race is utterly ridiculous and in a few centuries they'll look at us with the same awe that we have when we think about the imperial chinese exam for exemple.

Basically if you're not contributing to objective enhancement of mankind (for exemple by working in one of the few eugenics start-ups) or trying to fight death by working in a longevity field you should chill and understand that all your "achievements" are utterly useless and uninteresting.

The problem is low IQ people are having kids while high IQ people don't. China is the exception because they are a high IQ group which created a quasi-superpower in less than 30 years.

Most countries which created all those people can barely get their shit together.

Materialism is desire. Desire leads to suffering. The goal is to find inner peace and contentment, which are independent of external possessions, rather than seeking fleeting pleasure through material consumption.

I believe there are inherent needs we all have that if not met leads to suffering. Anything beyond that would be desire, which also leads to suffering. Balance = peace.
