We need a lot more rules on just how to talk to one another, how to be patient with each other, all kinds of things. Culture means norms and rules. Cultured people are better behaved people who have and abide by a greater number of rules.
Unruly people are also called "classless" or "low class," while cultured, well ruled people are called "classy."

The libertarian or neoliberal era began in the late 70s and then boomed under Reagan, then exploded under Clinton, the first boomer president.
The boomers led Reagan to power, then Clinton, and libertarianism or neoliberalism is a boomer thing, as well as for older gen x, like pre-1970 born.
Younger gen x is more straight laced and the millennials and gen z want more rules and more norms and a more structured society, hence the authoritarian impulses on both the left and the right today.
Libertarian ideology, aka neoliberalism, will need to die for decency and perhaps even a viable society, not doomed to collapse soon, to be reborrn.

Well behaved, highly functional societies must trust their governments, like Imperial Germany, Tokugawa and then Imperial Japan, the British Empire, Napoleonic France, and every other successful society.
And Americans trusted the government until the boomer rebellion of the latter 1960s. This hatred of government is a boomer thing.
What we need to do is become civic minded again (read "Bowling Alone") and rebuild a functioning government that we believe in and are proud of and that we are willing to serve for our own greater good.

The 20th century saw an internal fight between right liberals and left liberals. Left liberals won and right liberals were forced to retreat into various kinds of cope like capitalist liberalism and founding father worship liberalism. The 21st century has been characterized by hyper-left liberalism kicked off by Obama.

This battle between freedom and equality has been written in stone since the 18th century and we’re just living through the natural evolution of that battle. “Rightists” want freedom and leftists want equality.
