If their children wanted anything they had to work for it, sure, but getting a job was literally as easy as showing up somewhere and shaking the manager's hand. On paper they were worse off than many today but the cost of living and the societal setup of the time meant they lived a relatively comfortable life in which a full time min wage job allowed them to live without worrying, provide for many kids and still be able to enjoy themselves socially with hundreds of their neighbours in the dozens of pubs/social clubs and sports clubs in their relatively small industrial town. People got married, had kids and could provide for them without any special education or qualifications. Those with aptitude could get training and advancement to provide an even greater wage and quality of life.

Not only does our money go no where now, the jobs and careers just don't really exist anymore. No real manufacturing, vast swathes of industry sold off and outsourced... Having 6 kids seems impossible now.
