The basis of law is built upon the idea of the 'Rational Man', meaning actions taken in the public sphere are conducted in a manner of civility and good faith. Smothering the opinions of others because they disagree with what you have to say or because you simply hate the other person is not the actions of a Rational Man it's the actions of a tyrant.
