Charlie Kirk murder scene destroyed to avoid traumatizing everyone

Students at Utah Valley University returned to class, but for many, the physical setting of their education now carries the emotional weight of a tragedy that unfolded just steps away. The courtyard—once a place of gathering and calm—has become a stark reminder of violence that struck the heart of their campus.
“When traumatic events happen, our brain naturally does a lot to keep us safe,” Clegg explained. “It creates associations—anything tied to that day or event gets linked with the feeling of danger or lack of safety.”
Clegg emphasized that while it's tempting to avoid the space altogether, long-term healing often involves confronting the trauma in healthy, supported ways.
“I’ve heard they have done some things to transform that space, which I think is a great idea But if [students] are feeling things that feel paralyzing, they need to seek professional help.”
In response, UVU had made some subtle changes. The grass where Charlie Kirk was shot and killed has been removed, and bricks now cover the area. However, the overall design of the courtyard remains the same.
