Wagies are killing themselves
I suspect that there was a global spiritual crisis of loneliness between roughly 2015 and 2023, and while that crisis has not gone away, around 2023, everyone also ran out of money and has now had to make the choice to 1) dedicate their entire waking life to working to support themselves and a potential partner, essentially working 70+ hours per week just to have anything resembling a successful life, meanwhile there's no guarantee of this attracting the mate who is their primary reason for choosing this option, or 2) not work at all, which is a viable lifestyle these days but probably precludes them from winning a decent mate.

It feels like those who do work now work INSANE hours and are choosing to work their soul away. This began about 2 years ago as the pandemic receded into background.

Also around 2020 a lot of entry level jobs (restaurants/retail/etc) started running on skeleton crews and never readjusted because it makes them more money running a few workers ragged than it does to fully staff their establishment. Workers suffer and customers get worse experiences. The owners win again.
