Are cities like Portland, Cleveland and Seattle nice places to live? In my head, I picture them as classic white hipster sort of places. I used to look down on those types to some extent, but now that pretty much every city in my area is at least half hispanic/black/middle eastern, I really miss being able to safely walk down the street after 8 pm and get a craft beer surrounded by nonviolent people with an IQ over 96

I think those that are not hopelessly addicted or are at least functionally addicted blend in a little bit better so you end up seeing the worst of them. I lived on the other side of the river since 2002 and worked as a contractor where 90% of my contracts are in Portland. The suburban areas tend to feel safe but obviously run down to where some of them still have gravel roads. I am familiar with the bad parts of town because I have work in them. In a lot of ways, Cleveland is an abject shithole. But in a few ways, it's genuinely beautiful. Yes there are bombed-out neighborhoods, yes I've had guns and knives pulled on me, yes corruption is endemic and there are lots of low-intelligence types just sort of roaming around.

But there is also classic architecture, greenery and history that shines through the shines. There is also way more infrastructure than there are people, leading to sometimes ghostly, but often times freeing amounts of solitude. Back in my old degen lifestyle I could get away with anything. Lots of people still do.

Brutal. How long can this really go on? Some of the videos I've seen are horrifying, and I've seen some nasty things in person.
