And the governments simply do not give a shit enough about passenger train lines to invest in the infrastructure and work needed to build them at this point when this society is so used to driving, and so much money has already been put into roads. Europe has already spent many years building up their train network, and has less open / unused space.

It isn't. White areas also don't have access to reliable public transport. The reason is corporate capture by automobile and petrochemical corporations. That's not the reason, though.
The investment has gone into roads for very good reasons.
Roads are far cheaper and more flexible than rail.
A road can be anything from packed dirt to a freeway with graded entrances.
Roads can be used by virtually anything with wheels or legs. Cars, trucks, busses, pedestrians, bicycles, horse-drawn carriages-- you name it.
Small vehicles can use a road network independently with minimal coordination or scheduling.
Road networks are easy to connect.

Rail is a specialized case that's good for high-volume transport between high-value locations. The rail itself is expensive. The trains are large and expensive. Operating trains is expensive. Routes must be scheduled and coordinated and can only go where there are stations compatible tracks.

So it has to be worth it. For passenger travel means connecting density to density.

train travel is fine but inconvenient and not anymore coseffective. i use the train often and it's good for distance travel but locally, even in a supported infrastructure like nyc, it's expensive and time consuming.

This. We used to look forward to both train and airplane travel. Both have been ruined because the companies tolerate incredibly poor behavior from passengers. I think if you act out on an aircraft and cause an incident, you should be banned from flying for a long period. Ten years. Second outburst is a life ban.

Same with trains, buses, other publically-accessible transportation. Enforce minimum behavior standards, make NO exceptions for supposed mental health issues.
