I don’t know about the Canadian system, but in the US there’s at least a couple different ways. One way is you do 20 years in the military, you then work for the federal government for a couple decades or whatever where you have a hiring preference because you’re a veteran, and finally get Social Security. Each of those are a pension. If your wife did the same thing then you got six pensions for your household. This is often called triple dipping. Another way would be to work for the federal government for say 30 years or more to get fully vested, during this time, accumulate money in your thrift savings plan, then retire. Once you hit the right ages, you will get an FERS pension, you can annuitize your TSP Balance into a cash stream if you want, and finally, you get Social Security as well.
