>The $150/month apartment was a three bedroom they shared with two other people. When they retired they got a corporate pension paying them $2500/month. At 65 they get social security paying them $4500/month. Their house they bought for $100k in 1983 is not worth $1.5 million and their stock portfolio where they put savings for 30 years is worth $5.6 million.
My parentβs apartment was $90 a month, in a large house that basically at one point was a mansion, in the 1970s.
The apartment was 4 rooms, and would probably cost $3,000-$4,000 currently, although it has probably been split up into smaller apartments nowadays, doubling the potential rent.
At the time, a single 40 hour weeks wages at minimum wage would have paid for the apartment, and I think my father made double minimum wage, or a bit more.
My mother also worked at the time making a bit over minimum wage.
My parents were able to buy a piano, and upgrade the appliances, and problems in the building got fixed quickly.
